re'edition 3000: A Place of Refuge
Hans Kaufeld presents the new sofa designed by Jean-Pierre Dovat

In as early as 2003 and 2004, designer Jean-Pierre Dovat accompanied the relaunch of luxury upholsterer Hans Kaufeld, then a subsidiary of the prestigious manufacturer de Sede in Switzerland. As Art Director of a brand steeped in tradition, the internationally acclaimed designer came up with a sophisticated and puristic style with precision craftsmanship. The proprietor of the meanwhile independent company, Bernhard Schüler, still relies on the creative impetus provided by Dovat.

In order to be able to understand how the new Hans Kaufeld model re'edition 3000 came into being, one needs to be aware of the past history. For Jean-Pierre Dovat reworked a piece of furniture for the anniversary year which he had already developed for de Sede in 1987. The edition 3000 model is reminiscent of an elegant suitcase from the turn of the 19th century. A leather exterior with a lining of exquisite cloth, the sofa successfully maintained its position on the market until the mid 1990s. Dovat has now revised his piece of upholstered furniture in detail and modified it by adding interesting combinations of fabric.

With exquisite fabrics, in leather or trench, a waxed cotton, re'edition 3000 still retains the original idea, while, at the same time, lending a contemporary flair to the sofa. This exclusive piece of furniture is available in low and high designs and, to quote Jean-Pierre Dovat, "has been transported into today's world". Innovative configurations make for interesting chaiselongue and paravent options as well as generously-sized headboards. The designer comments: "My models stand alone in the room, providing a safe haven or combine to create exciting spatial compositions."

While the question as to the definition of luxury was already raised during the design process in 1987, the answer is provided once more by Jean-Pierre Dovat some 20 years later: It is simplicity but not banality. Something precious but nothing ostentatious. And something steadfast to accompany us throughout our lives.
